Spec. Vet. Med. Aleksandar Andrija Pavlićević
Research Profile
Since the beginning of the 2000s, through research and international clinical practice, he has been dedicated to the control of the most important ectoparasite in poultry farming, the red poultry mite Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer).
He operates with an authentic program for the control of D. gallinae, a comprehensive approach based on preventive veterinary medicine and rational control. Contrary to the generally accepted view and practice that suppression is the only possible strategy, he has proven that the only real solution in industrial poultry production is the eradication of D. gallinae combined with the implementation of biosecurity measures. He has carried out this procedure hundreds of times during his 26 years of practice.
To determine the acaricide (pesticide) profile, he introduced an original laboratory testing method for D. gallinae (patent, P-441/01). When acaricides (pesticides) were the only available option, he applied them in a manner that excluded their further use (New How). Through controlled application and eradication, he demonstrated a way to prevent the frequent uncontrolled use of acaricides and minimize their negative toxicological impact.
He identified SiO₂ as the first alternative to acaricides for the control of D. gallinae in industrial poultry facilities. He introduced the combined use of powdered and liquid SiO₂ and perfected its application to the point of enabling eradication of D. gallinae in empty facilities (New How).
He developed the first dedicated product based on inert oils (Pulcap, patent P-762/2017) and proved its advantages compared to existing control methods for D. gallinae, as well as its potential for facilitating eradication in empty facilities.
He created a new method with inert oils, ANT22 (New How). In combination with selected medicines, he reintroduced the possibility of eradicating D. gallinae in both populated and empty facilities.
In addition, he has:
- introduced a method for early detection of D. gallinae;
- improved forensic evaluation;
- demonstrated that some specimens of D. gallinae can survive for more than a year;
- contributed to the assessment of D. gallinae prevalence
- proved the possibility of D. gallinae transmission by the housefly Musca domestica;
- pointed out shortcomings in EU D. gallinae control;
- highlighted errors in poultry welfare-oriented housing systems;
- contributed to the understanding of acaricide resistance development in D. gallinae control;
- emphasized the economic importance for poultry producers in controlling D. gallinae;
- proved the unjustified use of known essential oils for external D. gallinae control;
- innovated a multifunctional machine (patent, P 2024/1051) for cage washing,
disinfection, optimized external application of aqueous solutions and emulsions for D.
gallinae control, and aerosol treatment; - innovated a solution for extensive poultry farming, proposing D. gallinae control based
on natural balance, a small mobile poultry house (patent, P 2024/1123).
